Tonkotsu King
Thursday, 6 February 2014 | 06:27 | 0 comments
Tonkotsu King has one of the longest queues in Singapore. The HGW ratings were extremely favourable as well. Naturally, expectations are very high. My partner and I were really lucky. We reached Tras Street at 11.15am on a sunday. There were two people in the queue, waiting for the shop to open (opening hours is from 11.30am) so we managed to get seats. I ordered the black spicy tonkotsu ramen, while my partner tried the red one.

I am sad to say that we do not agree with majority of the voters on HGW. My partner and I were extremely disappointed with our ramens!! IMO, this place is seriously overrated. I had ramens at Ippudo, Marutama, Yoshimaru and Ramen Champion and find all of them tasting better than Tonkotsu King. I am uncertain whether I would want to patronize Tori and Gyoza King now. Prior to my visit to Tonkotsu King, we were planning to visit all 3 places. Now, I am not that sure :/

The Sushi Bar
Wednesday, 18 December 2013 | 02:23 | 0 comments
If you are looking for affordable, delicious and authentic japanese food in Singapore, this is seriously a place you can't miss. Hidden within the retail shops in the upper levels of Far East Plaza, you bound to recognize the eatery from the long queues outside the shop. My friend and I were very lucky on that day because we were slightly earlier before the dinner peak hour. We managed to get our seats almost quite immediately because we were first in the queue.
Scallop Mentaiyaki
Salmon Crab Aburi Roll
Sirloin steak, medium rare (100g)
Salmon Prawn Aburi Roll
Tofu Cheesecake
There was really nothing to complain about. All the dish that we ordered tasted absolutely fantastic. I can't pick a favourite dish because everything just tasted as good. The sirloin steak had a texture that felt as though the beef melts in the mouth. My friend who don't take beef often said that she was very impressed by the dish and professed her new love for beef. The burnt mentaiko together with the scallop was an extremely good
combination of flavour and texture. The aburi rolls: both the crab and
prawn were oh my god sooooo yummy. There's burnt mentaiko on top of the half-cooked salmon sashimi and creamy avocado with crab/prawn within the sushi rolls. The tofu cheesecake was commendable as well. 3 layers of goodness (tofu, cheese and graham crust) all in one. The prices of all the dishes were extremely reasonable. We spend $24/person for everything. This is definitely in my favourite list of places for japanese sushi and I can foresee myself going back there again and again.

Flor Patisserie

Flor patisserie by Chef Yamashita is one of my favourite dessert places in Singapore. The chef who was formerly from Patisserie Glace opened a shop of his own located at Duxton Hill. The patisserie has since expanded and has outlets in Siglap and Takashimaya. I brought a couple of good friends to Flor@Duxton Hill and these are photos of our visit:

Tamoya Udon

If you're looking for the best udon places in Singapore. This is one of them. Tamoya Udon sells extremely affordable and delicious udon. There are currently two outlets in Singapore: one in Liang Court and the newest branch at Chinatown point. In addition to udon, they also served tempuras.
Liang Court Branch
Beef kake Udon
Tempura of choice
The udon is extremely chewy and the soup was sweet, rich and full of flavour. My favourite tempura is the fried meat. The meat fillings are well-marinated and very tasty. I will definitely visit Tamoya again. The food is good. The price is affordable. My udon costs about $12. The cheapest udon, the classic clear soup udon costs only $4.80. Extremely value for money!!

Koh Grill and Sushi Bar
| 07:48 | 0 comments
Japanese food is one of my favourites. Koh Grill and Sushi Bar was introduced by a friend to me. Brought my cousin and sibling there for lunch some time ago. We ordered their popular Shiok Maki, Shiok Maki Version 2, Crabby Maki and Sashimi platter to share. Yeap...the names sound pretty crazy but wait till you see the photos of them:
Ocha
Sashimi Platter
Shiok! Maki
Shiok! Maki Version 2
Shiok Maki is a maki made primarily of avocado, unagi and salmon, topped with burnt cheese, mayo, mentai and tobiko. The word "Shiok" is a Singaporean slang for "extremely delicious/awesome/wonderful". The version 2 is a maki made of tempura shrimps instead and crabby maki is a maki mainly on crab meat. This place is definitely worth coming again. The sashimi was really fresh and tasty, and all makis ordered were as delicious and shiok as they look! Japanese foodies, Koh grill and sushi is a must-visit.Contact Information:

Vanilla Bar & Cafe
Thursday, 21 November 2013 | 00:16 | 0 comments
Vanilla Bar & Cafe is one of my favourite cafes in Singapore. Went there with a friend earlier this year. This place literally smells like vanilla, very pleasant and refreshing!! If you love Japanese and western cuisine, this place is definitely for you!!
I ordered the chef-recommended pulled-pork bbq sandwich while my friend she ordered a chicken cutlet with fries. In addition, we ordered a plate of mentaiko crab cakes to share. As for desserts, we decided to try their highly popular vanilla dirt cake and the molten chocolate lava cake.

Chicken cutlet and fries (can't remember the exact name)
Vanilla Dirt Cake
Molten chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream
The mentaiko crab cakes were soooooo delicious!!! My friend I contemplated a second portion, but decided not to for we were worried we could not finish our food. I love the pork sandwiches that I ordered. The texture of the meat was so soft and moist, the bbq sauce was not too overwhelming. The chicken cutlet was so-so and too much for my friend. She did not manage to finish it. The vanilla dirt cake was really cute. It was served in a flower pot and had a fake plastic flower attached to the oreo crumbs of the cake. The cake was frozen and tasted like vanilla-cheese ice-cream with lots of oreos. The molten chocolate lava cake was decent. The semi-sweet chocolate complemented with the sweetness of the ice cream. The food prices at vanilla are pretty affordable. My pork sandwich was $10.90. The other dishes were about between $12 to $19 depending on what you order. I can't wait to revisit the place again.

Kki Cafe

Anyone with a sweet tooth? And fancies vintage toys and stationery? I got a great place to introduce to you!! Kki Cafe sells really delicious cakes and they are all made by the owner of the shop and he learnt to make them on his own! Extremely talented. Kki's specialty is the Mont Blanc. It sells out very quickly. If you want to try it, call the shop to reserve it.
Some of the cakes I've tried:
My favourites from Kki are the chocolate raspberry and strawberry pistachio. They have special japanese names for their cakes as well. Have yet to try the popular mont blanc.

Dozo Restaurant
Sunday, 17 November 2013 | 17:59 | 0 comments
Dozo restaurant is an awesome place for celebrations such as valentine's day, birthdays and anniversaries. The food is mainly western-japanese fusion and are served in courses. For lunches, six-course meals and there is a wide selection of dishes for you to choose from. For dinners, it is the same for lunch except that seven-course meals are served to you. An extra dish is included in dinner and that is the sashimi platter. Thus dinner is more expensive than the lunch. The prices at dozo ranges from $60 to $ 80 before extra charges-More affordable than any other fine dining places for special occasions. The food is extremely good with large portions too!
They gave complimentary drinks at the beginning of our lunch:
Our Starters (Chef-selected assorted platter: Smoked salmon, scallop and foie gras)
The following photos are a combination of the dishes that my partner and I ordered:
(My partner messed up the mushroom truffle soup before I could take a pic of it :( )
